Moon (2009)

Sam Bell has a three year contract to work for Lunar Industries. For the contract’s entire duration, he is the sole employee based at their lunar station. His primary job responsibility is to harvest and periodically rocket back to Earth supplies of helium-3, the current clean and abundant fuel used on Earth. There is no direct communication link available between the lunar station and Earth, so his only direct real-time interaction is with GERTY, the intelligent computer whose function is to attend to his day to day needs. With such little human contact and all of it indirect, he feels that three years is far too long to be so isolated; he knows he is beginning to hallucinate as the end of his three years approaches. All he wants is to return to Earth to be with his wife Tess and their infant daughter Eve, who was born just prior to his leaving for this job. With two weeks to go, he gets into an accident at one of the mechanical harvesters and is rendered unconscious. Injured, he awakens back at the station in the infirmary, he assumes assisted by GERTY. GERTY tells him that a rescue team named Eliza will come to the station to clean up the aftermath of the accident. After his recuperation, he takes an unauthorized trip back to the broken harvester, where he makes an unexpected discovery. Because of his find, he begins to doubt his sanity, then his true identity, then the company and GERTY’s willingness to do what is best for him. Because of his resulting beliefs, his sole mission becomes how to get back to Earth on his own.

whiteout

It was an ordinary rescue mission for dam controller Togashi Teruo (Yuji Oda) and his colleague Yoshioka Kazushi as they set out to assist a few climbers who met an unexpected blizzard near the Okutowa Dam. Unfortunately, Yoshioka was injured while helping the others and Togashi had no choice but to seek help alone. Things got worst when WHITEOUT – a meteorological phenomenon appeared and Togashi lost his best friend forever.

Meanwhile, with the most advanced technology, Utsuki Hirotaka (Koichi Sato) and his group of terrorists blow up the only main road to Okutowa Dam, the largest dam in Japan. They take over the dam along with the workers as hostages. They demanded JPY$5 billion from the government with a 24 hours deadline. To let the government know that they meant business, they decided to kill the hostages one by one unless they hear a definite answer from the highest government official. Among the hostage is Hirakawa Chiaki (Nanako Matsushima), Yoshioka’s fiancée whom Togashi promised his best friend to take good care of if anything bad should happen to him.

To make things more complicated, there was a snowstorm and no one can get in or out from the dam. Either the government pays the ransom or the dam will blow up along with the 200,000 residents living close to it…

The Intimate Lovers (2005)

Telling a story of two strangers who meet by chance in an elevator, The Intimate follows their journey through the day and night (which doesn’t seem to end by the way), as they discover about each other, and about themselves in the process. Kinda like Before Sunrise in its treatment, the lovers, nameless except known as Boy (Jo Dong-Hyuk) and Girl (Sung Hyun-Ah), play the usual courtship mind games, playing coy, being aggressive, taking turns to bust each others chops as they fall into each other’s arms.

Hana and Alice (2004)

When free-spirited Alice develops a crush on a random stranger at the train station, she offers her best friend Hana the guy’s “half brother”. Hana declines, but soon develops feelings for the strange boy. Later, when they enter high school, Hana joins the storytelling club, and her crush, Masashi, is in it too. Upon witnessing him hit his head on a garage door, she lies and says she is his girlfriend. A series of events follow, and a subtle triangle develops between Hana, Alice and Masashi. Despite outward appearances, this film isn’t just about puppy love, it also tells the story of friendship between two girls, and the different situations in their lives (especially in Alice’s family situation). So don’t write off this movie just yet!
